Rubio campaign says Demings’ comments in support of ‘secure the border’ are ‘out of touch’

Sen. Marco Rubio’s reelection campaign rebuked U.S. Rep. Val Demings on Tuesday for remarking at a Democratic National Committee press conference that Congress should pass a bill that “secures the border and prevents federal agencies from releasing illegal immigrants into our communities without providing them with proper notice.”

In an email, campaign manager Adam Day quoted a Fox News article that cited an ABC poll finding half of likely voters favor a shutdown if Trump and Democrats cannot come to an agreement on an immigration deal that includes funding for a wall on the southern border.

Trump and GOP leaders have dismissed the idea of a government shutdown, which would be caused by the refusal of the White House and GOP House and Senate leaders to approve an agreement with Democrats that includes wall funding.

“This election-cycle charade should end,” Day wrote. “Congress should be focused on solving the real problems facing our country — expanding American jobs and wages, protecting national security, and making health care work for every American.”
